Illegal Ousting of Jathedar Balwant Singh

WSC-AR strongly believes that the responsibility of the Jathedar Sahibs of the five Takhts is to serve the interest of the entire Sikh Panth, independent of the interest of the local politicians. For that reason, WSC-AR vehemently opposes the possible ouster of Jathedar Nandgarh of Takht Damdama Sahib for his independent opinion in taking a stand in favor of the Nanakshahi Calendar as approved in 2003.Jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh the Jathedar of Takt Damadama Sahib is likely to be sacked on January 17, 2015 as per the directions of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) president Sukhbir Badal. The speculations have also been endorsed by Dal Khalsa of Punjab which issued a press statement in this regard earlier.

Jathedar Nandgarh’s revolt against the pro-RSS/anti-Sikh agenda of SAD (Badal) and SGPC has put him in the dock. He stands in favor of the original Nanakshahi calendar and also supports the aspirations of the Sikh nation. In view of this stance, the RSS/BJP controlled Chief Minister of Punjab, Prakash Badal along with the SGPC want to teach Jathedar Nandgarh a lesson.

It has come to our attention that Parkash Badal has instructed his son Sukhbir Badal and other underlings to get the signatures of all SGPC executive members in advance seeking their approval for Jathedar Nanadgarh’s removal.

Parkash Badal seems hell bent on removing Nandgarh to appease all the ‘deras/babas’ and the Sant Samaj which has pro-RSS/BJP leanings, who want to revert back to the Brahmanical Bikrami Lunar calendar.

WSC-AR denounces such political antics by the Badal clan in trying to bring the august house of the Jathedar down, simply to appease their political masters at the Center. All the five Takhts must remain independent of any political party and cannot be controlled on anyone’s whim. This would set a dangerous precedent and belittle the stature of the Takhts. It is the decision of the Sikh worldwide to endorse the original 2003 Nanakshahi calendar with all the important major dates being fixed. Further this is a symbol of the independent Sikh Faith.

The World Sikh Council – America Region (WSC-AR) is the umbrella organization representative of Sikhs in the United States. It is an elected body of Sikh Gurdwaras and institutions. Currently 61 Gurdwaras and other Sikh institutions across the nation are members of WSC-AR. WSC-AR works to promote Sikh interests at the national and international level focusing on issues of advocacy, education, and well-being of humankind.
