Special meeting with TSA Regional Director and BFL Airport Director at Bakersfield, CA April 28, 2016

Members of Bakersfield Sikh community including Nazar Singh Kooner, Balmeet Singh and Attorney Gurujodha Singh Khalsa met with Mr. Richard Strickland – BFL Airport Director and Mr. Robert Benson – TSA Regional Director to discuss a recent incident involving a high school student-author Karanveer Singh Pannu, security protocols, and the Sikh Faith at BFL on April 28, 2016. The Sikh American community of Bakersfield also took the opportunity to present the book, “Bullying of Sikh American Children – Through the Eyes of a Sikh American High School Student” written by Karanveer to Robert Benson (TSA) to increase their knowledge about Sikh Americans and heighten their awareness and sensitivity to the sacred importance of the Sikh Turban.

Members of the Sikh American contingent appreciated the understanding and sensitivity towards the issue of Sikh Turbans advanced by the TSA Regional Director Robert Benson and the Airport Director Richard Strickland. This meeting was part of an ongoing dialog and education of religious sensitivities where all the stakeholders can come up with sensible solutions while continuing to keep everyone safe when flying.
