Sikh Cultural Training Day at the Charlotte Gurdwara, North Carolina

On the heels of a very successful Teacher’s Appreciation Day held earlier in March, the Charlotte Gurdwara Sangat and volunteers from American Sikh Council helped organize, host and participate in a Sikh Cultural Training Event for the Charlotte Mecklenburg School principals. This event was held at the Gurdwara Sahib in Charlotte, North Carolina, a member Gurdwara of the American Sikh Council, on March 5th, 2016. Remarkably, more than forty principals from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Public School system came to the event to gain experience about Sikhs. Among the highlights were Dastar tying, playing classical musical instruments, sampling authentic Indian food as well as presentations on the Dastar and the Sikh Culture. The important issues of education and bullying were highlighted and all the principals were given a copy of the recently released book, Bullying of Sikh American Children, written by Karanveer Singh Pannu, a Sikh American high school student.
The event was important in building a lasting relationship with influential members of the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System so that issues pertinent not only to the Sikh Community, but also the community at large, such as bullying and curriculum enhancement, are discussed.
The American Sikh Council (ASC) encourages others to take a proactive role and host similar events at their local Gurdwaras to build rapport with the local educators and key officials in order to help resolve the issues facing the Sikh community in schools.
