Speakers and delegates being honored at the Conference on April 21, 2019

American Sikh Council (ASC) Vice-President S.Jasbir Kaur was invited as the keynote speaker at the academic conference held by Canadian Sikh Study and Teaching Society in honor of Guru Nanak Purab to celebrate his 550th birthday which was held at the Crystal Banquet Hall, Surrey, BC, Canada on April 21, 2019.

There was a very enthusiastic gathering of over 550 attendees who came to listen and participate in this important conference.

Many well-known speakers were invited from the US, UK, Canada and Punjab, South Asia.

S.Jasbir Kaur the only female speaker from the US spoke on how Guru Nanak Sahibji empowered women by showing the world the truth and importance of women at a time when women were subjugated by society and the prevailing faiths in South Asia during the life of Guru Nanak Sahibji. Giani Shivteg Singh spoke about the rejection of ‘Karam Khand’ by Guru Nanak Sahibji and elaborated by giving many examples.

Dr. Gurdarshan Singh from Punjab spoke about politics and politicians. He further expanded on the vocal stand taken by Guru Nanak Sahibji consistently throughout his life against all kinds of tyranny and oppression.

Dr.Iqtadar Kramat Cheema from the UK discussed Guru Nanak Sahibji and his political wisdom and how he changed the prevailing corrupt systems of his time by pushing back against every unethical norm.

S.Sarabjit Singh spoke on the critical importance of the Nanakshai Calendar and how the MN Calendar makes the Sikh identity even more distinct from the surrounding faith traditions.
