Sarabjeet Singh brutally scarred by the Indian Police
The American Sikh Council (ASC) is shocked at the disgraceful behavior of the Police in India’s capital – New Delhi on June 16, 2019. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPXXSQCzM4A
Videos show over a dozen Indian Policemen with submachine guns, pistols and large wooden sticks brutally beating an elderly Sikh man, Sarabjeet Singh and his teenage son, Balwant Singh on a busy public street to near death in the Mukerjee Nagar area of New Delhi, India – all in broad daylight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZwiwnZSw4s
A Hindu Asst. Sub-Inspector Sanjay Malik started insulting Sarabjeet Singh apparently when his auto-rickshaw bumped into his police vehicle. According to witnesses, the conversation escalated into an assault after the victim refused a demand by the policeman to pay a bribe. An argument ensued between the two, but was stopped after Sarabjeet’s son cajoled his father to let go and they returned to their vehicle. In the meantime the Asst. Sub-Inspector ran to the local police station and brought several policemen who started to chase and then beat up Sarabjeet Singh. In order to defend himself from so many attackers Sarabjeet Singh tried to defend himself with his kirpan, but was beaten, thrown on the ground, overpowered and taken to the police station. Even his 16 year old son Balwant Singh was beaten and then abducted!
Reports state that the father and son were kidnapped and taken to the police station, while all cameras were turned off and brutally beaten with large sticks, batons, belts and kicked to near death by over 20 policemen.
If this is how policemen act in the so-called largest democracy in the world; no wonder it is more like a demo(n)cracy, where protectors of the common citizens act like demons. How can anyone be safe; especially religious minorities in particular, when ordinary policemen nonchalantly act like professional criminals and can get away with impunity?
It is a mockery of common sense that the same lawless policemen have registered criminal cases against the two innocent Sikhs (Indian Penal Code 307 & 186) charging them with attempted murder and other serious charges.
The Police in India are all part of the general society with entrenched biases and prejudices against others different from them. These policemen are part of the same police force which in November 1984, aided and abetted in the genocide of over 10,000 Sikhs in the streets of New Delhi and its surroundings while the world stood by and has done little till today. India has yet to officially acknowledge and apologize for the pogrom called the “Sustained Sikh Genocide 1984 – 1998” where hundreds of thousands of Sikhs were murdered by the Indian police and soldiers in Punjab and across India!
In country where all the government institutions are beholden to the whims of the ‘permanent (upper) caste (Hindu) majority’, while the law enforcement, the judiciary and most of the media are all puppets of an authoritarian regime, then absolutely no one is safe or secure.
No wonder, all religious minorities are extremely wary of the law enforcement in India, because not only are they corrupt but they are commonly prone to criminal acts themselves. Policemen cannot act like a mad mob!
The American Sikh Council (ASC) calls upon the Indian authorities to apprehend all the policemen involved in this heinous crime and immediately be dismissed from their positions while strict legal action must be taken so that they can be put behind bars. This kind of behavior is completely unacceptable in any democratic country.
