Misogyny by the Indian propaganda machine!

Meena Harris with her aunt, US Vice-President Kamala Harris

The American Sikh Council (ASC) is appalled at the virulent attack on the very articulate Meena Harris who put out a tweet in support of the Farmer’s protest in India. Meena stated in her tweet, “It’s no coincidence that the world’s oldest democracy was attacked not even a month ago, and as we speak, the most populous democracy is under assault. This is related. We ALL should be outraged by India’s internet shutdowns and paramilitary violence against farmer protesters.”

The bright young American woman simply spoke from her heart because she has an ethical moral compass and empathized with the millions of farmers protesting peacefully while suffering the elements on the highways of India, only demanding the repeal of the three draconian Farmers Laws enacted unilaterally and unconstitutionally by the Modi government.

Meenakshi Ashley Harris is not only a Harvard educated lawyer, but an author and activist. She comes from a family of strong educated women, starting with her mother Maya Harris also a lawyer and activist, followed by her aunt, a lawyer, a US senator, and now the newly elected Vice-President Kamala Harris of the United States of America.

They all happen to be partly of Indian descent, which should make every South Asian proud. Instead, the Bollywood toadies, the RSS/BJP trolls and the pliable Indian media have sold their soul to the Indian regime, yet have the gall to insult and disrespect anyone who speaks up for the suffering and downtrodden.

The hidden pus of misogyny in India’s highly entrenched patriarchal society is out in the open for everyone to see today. The world’s largest alleged democracy has always worked meticulously to fabricate a giant veil around India to portray it as a very non-violent and peaceful nation with the help of the unsaintly Gandhi to hide a very malevolent India.

In a country like India where the virtue of a woman is highly prized, yet paradoxically rape is not considered a serious crime even by some state authorities. Studies show that between 90 – 99% of the rapes go unreported. In 2018 there were 33,356 reported rapes, whereas around 300,000 rapes go unreported, with the majority happening in rural areas. This alarming fact seems of little consequence to the Hindutvadis, while they point fingers elsewhere.

Everyone who had the audacity to attack Meena Harris, Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Greta Thunberg and many other wonderful women who stood up for the rights of the farmers in India should hang their heads in shame for acting like petulant children. While the dim-witted disciples of the hate mongering RSS/BJP are burning effigies of these women, little do they realize that the names of Meena, Rihanna, Greta will be remembered in history forever, while the handmaidens of RSS/BJP will be quickly thrown into the dustbin of history.

As Americans we are truly proud of Meena Harris, Robyn Rihanna and so many unnamed women and men who have had the courage to stand up when many others have vacillated. After the Indian media’s attacks Meena Harris proclaimed, “I won’t be intimidated, and I won’t be silenced,” in her tweet.

Meena Harris vociferously stated in her most recent tweet, “This isn’t about agricultural policy. It’s also about the persecution of a vocal religious minority. Its police violence, militant nationalism, and attacks on labor rights. Its global authoritarianism. Don’t tell me to stay out of your affairs. These are all of our issues.”

Thanks to Rihanna and Meena who helped create a global outrage on the plight of the millions of farmers who have been protesting since November 26, 2020 on the outskirts of the Indian capital, New Delhi. The world’s media has now started to pay attention to the very callous human rights violations perpetrated by the Modi government against peaceful protestors, who are overwhelmingly hardworking farmers, farm workers and the common citizens of India.

India’s tall claims about respecting women and being democratic seem very hollow when strong women from other countries get browbeaten for standing up for the protesting farmers who are all mostly men. The Indian government and the media need to show more maturity as they are being judged by the world and how they treat the meek and the weak since it speaks volumes of who they really are!

The American Sikh Council (ASC) Vice-President Jasbir Kaur said, “I want to sincerely thank my sisters of conscience, Meena, Rihanna, Greta and many other well-meaning women who have had the courage to speak truth to power.”
