The American Sikh Council (ASC) is shocked by the terrible crimes committed against eight innocents who all happened to be Asian American and mostly women. ASC extends its deepest condolences to the victims and their families of those involved in Tuesday night’s murderous rampage at three spas around Atlanta, Georgia. Out of the eight people who were killed, six were Asian American women.

According to the New York Times the alleged killer, Robert Aaron Long, a 21-year-old white male charged into three separate massage spas in the Atlanta (GA) area while shooting and wounding several people.

There has been a spate of hate crimes committed against Asian Americans from California to New York in recent months. Many of the perpetrators have used the words, ‘Chinese Virus’, while attacking victims at various locations. It is not farfetched to state that the corrosive environment created by the continued hate rhetoric of the former US President Trump and his failed reelection bid has contributed to the pent-up frustration by some of his followers who are now spewing their venom in many violent ways.

President Biden must take strong action against all violence committed against people of all shades, religions, ethnicities, etc., in order to change the highly charged environment of the past four years which has emboldened racists to attack people who do not fit the mold of the majority.

ASC Vice-President Jasbir Kaur stated, “The violent, racist and misogynistic attacks against women is a sign of social breakdown and is very disturbing. The authorities at all levels need to step up and take these crimes seriously and punish the preparators to the full extent of the law.”

The American Sikh Council (ASC) stands in solidarity with all not only our brothers and sisters in the Asian American community but in all communities, which continue to be negatively impacted by racist violence. We pray for all the deceased and the families who lost their loved ones in this horrific tragedy.

Sikh Americans are very sensitive to issues of bias but have been very resilient due to their continued belief in the ever-uplifting positive Sikh spirit. We pray and hope that Sikh Americans and all Americans help make a thoughtful, empathy driven change for a better and more peaceful future.
