The American Sikh Council (ASC) continues to organize a series of conferences on the newly enacted Farmers Laws in India and its future impact on farmers and the public.
The speaker for the eleventh event in the series will be Attorney Rajvinder Singh Bains. He holds a B.Sc. Engineering (Electrical) from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, and a L.L.B. from Punjab University, Chandigarh.
He has had a distinguished career as an officer in Indian Navy from 1979 to 1982. He was a Teaching Assistant at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh, from 1982 to 1985. He has been a practicing law at Punjab & Haryana High Court at Chandigarh since 1985. He has primarily practiced in the fields of service law, human rights law and criminal law.
He has been associated with Punjab Human Rights Organization (PHRO) since 1986 and did public interest litigation from torture in custody to Aids testing kits, encroachments around the Darbar Sahib in Amritsar, demolition of settlements /slums around periphery of Chandigarh, discretionary allotments/admissions and benefits to big companies while allotting power plants on first come first serve basis in Punjab leaving the auction route, rights of contract workers, etc.
He co-authored the ‘Joy of Mathematics’ in the Saturday Plus column of the Tribune newspaper.
Some of the well-known cases that S. Rajvinder Singh Bains has litigated are as follows:
The trial of nine police officers from trial court till Supreme court which resulted in life imprisonment of five officers for abduction and murder of the famous human rights activist S.Jaswant Singh Khalra which led to mass cremation case which resulted in compensation to 1,500 families whose dear ones were cremated as unknown bodies in three cremations grounds of Amritsar, Punjab.
He is still conducting the longest criminal trial of Punjab in Hoshiarpur district. It was started by the younger sister of Shahid Bhagat Singh in 1989 in which the brother of her son in law was abducted and killed by police of Hoshiarpur district. Despite all threats and odds, the three police officer are facing trial for abduction with intent to murder.
S.Rajvinder Singh Bains is also the son of a fearless living icon, namely, Justice Ajit Singh Bains who spent years fighting for Sikh human rights against major odds.
